The Raphael Fishing Company Ltd., (7 July 1927) is historically important for being the oldest* commercial company in Mauritius based on continuous registration since incorporation (Nr. C404) with its original name and original business model unchanged. Today, catch-and-release fishing expeditions complement traditional, sustainable handline fishing from pirogues. Circa 40 Mauritians work off its thirteen island fishing bases.
In 1928, the Company acquired a 1901 Permanent Lease for 13 island fishing bases on the ”bancs” (archipelago). In 2008, the Permanent Lease was definitively adjudged as a Permanent Grant by Mauritius’ highest appellate court.
